23ft William Atkin gaff rigged “knockabout”
https://atkin.mysticseaport.org/Sail/DollyVarden.htmlA 1936 William Atkin design, probably built in the Great Lakes region in 1947. Present owner acquired in 2002 and Olwen now spends the sailing season moored in New Haven harbor. A fine example of Atkin’s “plank on sawn frame ” designs, hull form derives from the Seabright skiff.
The boat comes with a CT registered, road legal trailer included in the price. And a full set of Wm Atkin’s plans for his “Dolly Varden” design.
Lightly driven, the 7.5 hp Honda outboard auxiliary is way more power than Olwen needs. But this means that the gorgeous tanbark Nathaniel S. Wilson mainsail shows why the gaff rig remains a favorite for those who just like knocking about in boats. Interior is an unfinished project but I’ve camped out on her as is. Well maintained and ready to go, she is available for inspection in New Haven harbor by appointment.
