Join the team at the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding whose vision is to offer the world’s premier educational experience for learning craftsmanship through boatbuilding and marine systems. You will work with Chief Instructor Sean Koomen to teach highly-motivated students using a time-tested curriculum. As a degree-granting, accredited school, NWSWB requires faculty to demonstrate both experience in the trade and ability to teach. Instructors use teaching methods such as lectures, demonstrations, student feedback, homework assignments, 1:1 sessions checking student’s skills, and boat projects. These methods are modeled using industry standards in safety, craftsmanship, and project management. The ideal candidate will have strong background in boat building as well as teaching skills and work with dedication towards the success of the program. This is a full-time 40 hour per week year- round position.
Compensation: Depends on experience ($24-$32/hr) with generous benefit package including health insurance, retirement plan, paid sick, holiday & vacation. Relocation allowance available.
Specific Responsibilities
1) Instruction
a. Students: Provide support as required in learning the nomenclature, skills, and industry standards of boat building. Provide student assessment in the form of daily but also bi-quarterly evaluations.
b. Lectures: Prepare lectures and demonstrations as assigned by Chief Instructor. Instructors can expect to prepare and deliver 3-4 lectures per quarter.
2) Project Management
a. Provide project estimates for all boat projects.
b. Order all materials (beyond inventory) for each boat project.
c. Provide weekly project reports to the Chief Instructor.
d. Order supplies and materials as assigned by Chief Instructor.
e. Handle all correspondence with boat project clients, including monthly updates with photos.
3) Safety
a. Maintain a safe, clean, and healthy learning environment.
b. Provide all required tool and machinery safety instructor to students.
4) Communication
a. Attend all staff meetings, in-service days,
b. Work with Chief Instructor to establish annual work and vacation schedules.
5) Other duties: Professional development: Work with the Chief Instructor to create annual professional development plans.
Specific Skills Needed
· Minimum 4 years’ experience working in the boat building trade.
· Previous teaching experience
· Demonstrated project management skills.
· Certifications in First Aid/CPR and forklift operation a plus.Map
