Description
PIRATE (Hull #1121) was built at the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company in 1929 for Harold Keith, originally Sailing in Quissett Massachusetts. She has sailed on the Narragansett Bay since 1950s; I have owned her for 25+ years and I have thoroughly enjoyed every aspect of her, racing, day-sailing, and maintenance. She has done well on the race course, is not finished to museum quality like some of our class, but has been very well-maintained over the years as documented in her most recent survey which was performed nearing the completion of her refit in 2019 (Survey report .pdf available on request). Not mentioned is all new standing rigging performed by Joe Mello at RW ropes, and a new set of North sails in 2019. She performed beautifully in the Centennial regatta (second place overall) sailing in both Larchmont New York and Narragansett Bay and won the Newport Classic 2019. In addition to two sets of sails, I have a trailer that would need inspection and possible upgrades (review of brakes and lights, new tires, etc.) if she were to be towed any significant distance.
From the Narragansett Bay Herreshoff S class website (www.NBSClass.org): “By any measure, the S-Class is unique among yachts. Designed by the “Wizard of Bristol,” Captain Nat Herreshoff, perhaps the most renowned American naval architect ever, the S-Class was, and still is, one of Herreshoff’s most remarkable concepts. While Herreshoff is best known for his highly successful America’s Cup yachts, his innovative mind did not rest when it came to the finishing touches on this relatively small 27 foot yacht. From the unique graceful curve of the mast, the proud shape of the bow, the eye-pleasing overhang of the stern, to the remarkable contour of the keel, there is nothing ordinary about the design of the S boat.”
