Orion has been professionally maintained for more than two decades by two local boatyards [Parkers in Cataumet AND Wooden Tangent in Mattapoisett]
All Coast Guard required safety equipment has been acquired and has been put aboard the vessel including new and updated PFD’s; new anchor and attendant rode [chain and line]; man-overboard rescue system. Also, a flare kit; a first aid kit; portable Freon horns; a rechargeable and direct wired search lights and new fire extinguishers.
“Orion” was built to the original L. Francis Herreshoff plans [which are with the vessel]
with one gratifying change. Orion has a fibreglass hull which opens up the cabin to full standing room and no hull maintenance. [See specifications]The vessel has been meticulously maintained in the water and out. Any serious buyer will appreciate Orion upon a personal viewing. Whenever visiting a new port Orion invariably gets admiring comments.
Orion currently sails as a sloop but is built to also carry a mizzen mast as a traditional L. Francis ketch. All the aft mast standing rigging and sails are with the vessel to be rigged as a ketch if desired. All the deck hardware is bronze.
When the wind is up and no one is on Buzzards Bay, Orion comfortably sails at her best. She is an unusually dry boat under sail in a seaway. I have sailed her in 45 knot wind, an exhilarating wild ride without any concern that the boat could perform; and did!
