Description
16 foot sailing and rowing sharpie skiff to Arch Davis’s Laughing Gull design with some modifications including a small foredeck, NACA foil shape rudder and daggerboard, additional seating, and an aluminum stayed mast. She is very fast under sail or oar due to her long lean hull and efficient foils. She has a new 2023 jib with roller furling and a nearly new square top full batten mainsail with two reef points, both by Doyle Sails. She is unsinkable with a large full length air tight chamber as well as an air tight locker under the foredeck. She is equipped with locally made 9 foot spoon blade oars finished with varnish. the boat is built with high grade marine grade plywood and solid dimension lumber all fully sealed with epoxy. The bottom has an additional layer of fiberglass cloth and several layers of graphite powder infused epoxy. There are two strakes on the bottom to provide protection for beaching as well as directional stability while rowing. There are two openable scuppers in the stern that make her fully self bailing in the event of a capsize or just to keep her on a mooring. She is easily righted by one person if capsized and has a drop down boarding ladder on the stern to make reboarding easy. The boat also has a removable dodger and drop in risers with foam flotation that fit into the gunnels to make the boat able to handle more open water. My intent was to use the boat for Raid style expedition races, however age and arthritis have ended that dream.
The boat would make a great safe learner for kids to either row or sail, for one or two adults.
