Description
Cheerio II is a classic yawl, custom built in 1931 at the Fellows and Stewart Yard in San Pedro, CA. She has been owned by Richard McNish since 1980. Under McNish’s stewardship, the boat has had an active racing and cruising life. Two trips to Baja California, one trip to the Pacific Northwest (the San Juan Islands and Desolation Sound), once to San Francisco for the Master Mariners Regatta. She has frequently competed in the Newport to Ensenada Race, winning her class three times, most recently in 2019. In 1994/5 she had a major rebuild which included new frames, new planks and a new laid teak deck. In 2011, her mainmast broke racing and has been replaced with a new 32-sided laminated mast.
For buffs of Southern California Hollywood/Sailing history, in 1937 Cheerio was owned by actor Errol Flynn.
She has a 2023 survey in which her condition is described as very good to excellent overall condition for her age. I’ll be happy to email you the survey.
Dick McNish, Cheerio’s owner, is also the founder of the McNish Classic Yacht Race, which he started at PCYC in Channel Islands in 1978. The boat will be racing, as she has for the past 44 years, July 29, 2024.
