Lowell's Boat Shop

Established in 1793, Lowell’s Boat Shop is the oldest continuously operating boat shop in the country. Now a National Landmark and working museum, LBS is dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the art and craft of wooden boat building. An Apprentice Program for high school students and a full schedule of classes and workshops promotes this mission.

Stepping through the doors of the Shop is like stepping back in time. The earlier generations of Lowells and other Shop employees would marvel at the table saw and the advent of electricity and indoor plumbing; other than that, not much has changed! There is still a demand for traditional LBS-designed dories, and the Shop’s boat builders are hard at work daily, building our full line of in-house designs for purchase.
In addition to workshops and programs for both kids and adults, Lowell’s Boat Shop offers tours and events year-round.
