Owner’s Description
Sydney Flying Squadron is a sailing club founded in 1891 that organized the racing for Sydney Harbour’s open boats which were dominated by the early 1900’s by the 18-footers. The 18’s continued to evolve throughout the twentieth century to become the winged 3-man skiffs of today. About 2000 the other Sydney 18-footer club the NSW 18-Footers League became the home of the modern fleet and the Sydney Flying Squadron became the home of the historical replica fleet of the Australian Historical Sailing Skiff Association which now numbers 11 replicas of boats built between 1906 and 1950. Eight or nine boats turn up every Summer Saturday to relive the glory days of 18-footer racing on Sydney Harbour. A classic wooden ferry follows the fleet loaded with spectators which leaves from the club dock in Careening Cove.
