20′ centerboard cabin yawl built to the S. S. Crocker Sallee Rover design in 2009. I built it for a family who started the build while consulting with me. When it came to planking, they asked if I wanted to take it over. When I checked it out, the white oak backbone with transom, ribbanded molds and bent ribs looked very good, so I took it to my shop. The next day they asked if they could pay me to finish it, so that is how it went, they built the rig. I got a load of Atlantic cedar sufficiently long for full length planks, beautiful stuff. The cabin trunk and bulkhead is all white oak, originally varnished. The man and the son enjoyed her for 6 years, learning to sail, until the son grew up, after which they kept it in the water for a while before buying a trailer and hauling he to their country house where it sat for 6 year. When they lost their son, they went to sell the boat. I heard about this and contacted them. They asked me to come and see what I thought of her condition. She looked good to me and their price was better than fair, especially with the trailer. After a few days they called and said their ads had had no serious response, so would I like to buy her for less money than the trailer had cost. I wanted a boat, of course, and agreed as I happened to have just enough money at the time.

I saw this boat in build. It was a beautiful job–one that will last 100 years with any decent treatment. I thought at the time that she was too much boat for the length and sail area, but I now think I was wrong. Just lovely.
