Description
This beautiful Caledonia Yawl was professionally built on Long Island about ten years ago. I’m the third owner and have owned many sail-and-oar plywood lapstrake boats; this is easily the highest-quality build I’ve seen.
Specs
• Length: 19’6”
• Beam: 6’
• Draft: ~8″ with board and rudder up
• Easily rowed despite her size
• Trailer included
Rig
This boat carries a large gunter-rigged main without the mizzen, which is somewhat unusual for this design.
It also has the steps installed for both a mizzen and a balanced lug main, so the boat could easily be converted back to the standard yawl rig if desired.
Having sailed extensively with friends in standard balanced-lug Caledonias, I’ve been able to compare rigs directly.
• Gunter rig: faster upwind
• Balanced lug: slightly faster downwind
• Reaching: similar performance
The generous sail area moves the boat easily in very light air, while the three reefs keep it comfortable in stronger conditions (I’ve sailed in gusts around 35 mph).
This boat feels both like a nimble dingy, and also a little ship – ready for adventure!
Condition
The boat is currently in Bristol condition.
• Epifanes topside paint
• Ablative bottom paint
• Epifanes varnish on brightwork
• Sikkens oil on spars
• Beautiful North Sails in like-new condition
• Yamaha outboard with very low hours
Extras
• Sunbrella cover (works with the boat rigged or on the trailer)
• Solid, road-worthy trailer
• Oarlocks for rowing
The boat is currently stored inside my shop in Friendship, Maine, sitting on the trailer and ready to launch.
I’m selling because I’m shifting toward land projects and building a house, and I hate seeing such a wonderful boat used so little.
Note: A few photos show the boat in her previous dark blue hull and beige interior. The current colors are the light grey-blue topsides and light grey interior shown in the most recent photos (April 26).
Designed by Ian Oughtred, the Caledonia Yawl is widely considered one of the finest modern sail-and-oar cruising designs.
