Description
GEMINI was lofted and built from 2009 – 2010 by the Northwest School of Wooden Boatbuilding in Port Hadlock, WA. It is the newest hull in the Yankee One-Design class, and was the first new Yankee built in nearly fifty years.
The Yankee One Design racing class was designed by W. Starling Burgess in 1937. There were about 37 Yankees built, mostly in the 1940s and 1950s, and now there are only about 15 left (in four countries) worldwide.
The 2009 – 2010 construction of GEMINI was the subject of an article in WoodenBoat Magazine, Issue 221 (July/August 2011). The Yankee One Design Class is the topic of another article in the same issue.
The Yankee One-Design is a 30’6″ fractional sloop: narrow, fast, and with an exquisitely balanced helm. The low freeboard invites you to touch the water as it races by. Over half of the 4,775 lb displacement is in the lead keel, which contributes to a high secondary stability. The design carries 312-340 sq ft of sail and is known for exceptional handling and performance across a wide range of conditions. It’s a “sailor’s sailboat,” and well known as a joy to sail.
GEMINI is all bronze fastened, carvel-planked with 3/4″ silverballi planks over 1″ x 1¼” oak steam-bent frames, with select frames laminated at more acute angles. The transom is cold-molded using three layers of western red cedar covered by two layers of Honduras mahogany. The deck is marine plywood sheathed in fiberglass. The 17′ cockpit coaming boards are book-matched for their full length, resulting in mirrored matching patterns. All trim, inside and out, is mahogany. Hull color is Hatteras Off-White, with a dark blue boot and black bottom.
The hull was caulked by John Zimmer and Greg Freidricks. Standing rigging was installed by rigger Brian McGinn of Port Townsend.GEMINI has never leaked and has never required restoration — only seasonal paint and varnish.
A condition and valuation survey was conducted in November 2024, when GEMINI was hauled out and packed for storage and transport. The survey found no structural deficiencies. The surveyor’s estimated fair market value was $75,000–$90,000, with replacement cost for a like new vessel estimated at $250,000. The single recommendation was to confirm safety equipment is current before launch.
Accommodations and Interior — GEMINI sleeps two to four: there are two berths inside the cabin, and the cockpit benches convert to two additional berths by removing the shelf railing. The top of the interior cabinet pulls out to become a chart table.
Propulsion — GEMINI is powered by a Torqeedo Cruise 4.0 electric outboard on a custom bronze-clamped stern mount, with a 48V system consisting of two Torqeedo Power 48-500 lithium batteries, a remote throttle (and spare), and two battery chargers. The system allows easy navigation of marinas, canals, and locks, and provides reliable power through windless conditions.
Sails — Mainsail (Hogan Sails, recut and reinforced by Hasse & Co.) · Genoa #1 (Hogan Sails) · Genoa #2 (North Sails) · Lapper · Storm jib · Spinnaker (Hogan Sails). All sails have been professionally cleaned and serviced.
Rigging and Hardware — Standing rigging: SS 1×19 wire with chromed bronze turnbuckles, SS toggles, SS chainplates, and tackle-adjust backstay tensioner. Running rigging in very good condition. Two Harken 16 bronze self-tailing winches. Classic bronze deck and spar hardware. Varnished wood spars in excellent condition.
Safety and Deck Gear — Lifesling, multiple PFDs, boarding ladder, anchor with chain and rode, two handheld VHF radios, handheld depth finder, running lights, flares, fire extinguisher, dock lines, fenders, and more.
Full gear list and survey available on request.
GEMINI is being stored inside at Associated Boat Transport in Marysville, WA, available for trucking anywhere in North America.
I commissioned this boat to be built, and have been its only owner. I am looking for a good home for GEMINI. If you are interested in becoming its next caretaker, please contact me for more information.
GEMINI represents a rare opportunity to acquire a Yankee One-Design that requires no restoration work. With seasonal paint and varnish, it will be ready to sail this summer.
