Murray Peterson Coaster II
Schooner Anse La RocheThis schooner was designed by the well-known designer Murray Peterson, who after studying Naval Architecture at MIT joined the firm of John Alden as a draftsman before starting his own firm. He designed a series of vessels he termed “character craft”- smaller versions of the coastal commercial schooners then common on the East Coast. These designs are COASTER, COASTER II and COASTER III. COASTER II was built for Peterson’s own use in 1933, and later was sailed to the West Coast around Cape Horn. On the West Coast COASTER II sailed from San Francisco to Hawaii, and was used during WWII as a submarine spotter. Later COASTER II was moved to Marquette MI, where it remains.
Built on Bainbridge Island Wa, and launched in 2007, Rigged in 2009
This is a young schooner built with the highest skill level and of the best quality materials available.Anse La Roche is 43’ on deck and 61’ LOA with boom overhang, Davits, and bowsprit. These items are typically removed for winter moorage and the vessel measures 47’ LOA.
Anse La Roche is planked and decked with clear, vertical grain, Port Orford Cedar. She has steam bent and sawn white oak frames about 10in on center, teak covering boards, and mahogany cabin sides. Her spars are of grown douglas fir. She is completely fastened with silicon bronze slotted screws and carriage bolts. Her keel timbers, stem, horn timber and deadwood are of old growth douglas fir. Her rudder is an exotic hardwood.
Anse La Roche has a full set of OCEANUS sail cloth sails, handmade in Boothbay Maine. They are in like-new condition. Oceanus cloth is a high tech modern sail cloth that boasts the performance and resilience of a modern sail cloth with the appearance and hand of a traditional canvas. They are cream in color and the really glow at sunset!
On the bow she carries 2 120 lbs fisherman style anchors each with over 200ft of heavy link chain. Her traditional manual Lunenburg Foundry windlass hauls the anchors well. These anchors do not drag and we have sat out full gales with 3/1 scope on multiple occasions.
She is powered by a 1976 Sabb 2g inboard diesel with less than 500 hrs total! This vessel has a unique build history and has seen relatively little sea time for her age. Under my care we have sailed in every puff of wind and have averaged well under 100hrs per year.
Below decks she holds a full galley, a comfortable dinette for 4-5 people and 5-6 comfortable bunks. I am 6’3” and I can stand fully between the house deck beams. She is equipped with a 12v system consisting of 2 grp 27 AGMS and 100w of solar. The boat is away from shore power for 6 months of the year and never requires a charge. She has basic navigation equipment consisting of VHR Radio with AIS receiving, depth sounder, and multiple tablet charging ports. 12v lighting also runs the entirety of the cabin. She has hot and cold pressure water for the galley sink and deck shower as well as a seawater pump for the anchor windlass station.
Recent improvements
Refastened the entire deck including new fasteners and new bungs. Many seems have been recalled and re-paid. The decks have been lightly sanded and treated with a teak oil product. The decks are in great shape.
The entire vessel has been repainted/ varnished over the past several seasons with ongoing upkeep and effort. This includes much of the interior cabin space
In the spring of 2025, the vessel was hauled and completely wooded below the waterline. She was surveyed at this time showing impeccable condition in the timbers and fasteners. After wooding she was transitioned to a high performing hard bottom paint (Trinidad HD) that can be easily cleaned and has improved boat speed considerably. She received 3 coats of alternating colors for reference. She should not need bottom attention for 2 more seasons minimum.
Her canvas sail covers have been replaced
Her spars have been stripped bare and recoated with 12 coats of traditional Le tonkinois.
The entirety of her running rigging was replaced in 2023
Her standing rigging is wormed, parcelled, and served galvanized wire and has been inspected and kept tarred annually.
2026 her top mast was dropped, stripped, inspected, recoated and reinstalled with attention to cap shrouds.Anse La Roche is kept to a high workboat finish (Not yacht finnish) and has served as the flagship vessel of our sail charter company. She is turn key and I would not hesitate to sail her across any ocean tomorrow.
I have a survey available (May 2025) which clearly displays her quality and condition.
