Description
22′ Webbers Cove / Pemaquid Beach 22 1990
This special little “YOT” was never intended to go to work like its impressively sturdy stable mates. Pemaquid Harbor Yachts determined this one was going to get dressed up for the shows. And dressed well! In addition to the massive use of teak and bronze throughout, what caught my eye when I first saw her in Friday Harbor on San Juan Island WA. (I know…, what’s this classic Downeast boat even doing on the West Coast?! ..more on this later) was the careful attention to detail and those beautiful sweeping deck lines! Elliptical ports, radius cabin, round hatch, wave laminated windshield frame, transom/swim platform, even the settee seat back has a soft curve to ease the eyeball and soothe the mind. Good design is just…good design!
Easily recognizable on the East coast, (especially NE), Downeast boats earned a solid reputation for their comfortable sea keeping capabilities with fine entries and stable stance in choppy Atlantic waters. They instill a confidence of safety, practicality, and strength, with high bows (think dry), speed, stability (from a low central center of gravity), simplicity, and a prop that gives you a good bite when you need it. They can turn on their own axis with ease, and everything that makes this boat go, is ubiquitous.
Its rare to find them on the left coast, and even rarer to find one like this …anywhere!
Im a professional designer/woodworker and have just spent 1400 hours of the last year reconditioning everything inside, outside, port to starboard, stem to stern, and top to bottom. I added a few touches along the way:
New dash and gauges
Teak paneling to transom
Verticle strakes to cockpit walls and bulkhead
Vent in aft seat bench
Teak dash decksEvery surface has been reconditioned. All teak was wooded and 8-14 coats of new varnish applied. All bronze, has been polished or buffed and clear coated with Everbrite Protecta, including $700 of new screws, and bolts. The hardware on this boat is amazing! The bow rail is heavy 1/8″ thick wall bronze tubing. Cleats, steering linkage, rudder, fairleads, deck hardware, hinges, fasteners, controls, latches, port lights, bow roller, even the steering wheel is solid bronze! This is a mans boat, built by men that know what works, and lasts. Period.
The decks, and topsides have been repainted with Epifanes and the bottom got a new barrier coat and Pettit antifouling.
Full disclosure: at this writing I have yet to get it off the trailer to finish the bottom paint, and I intend to have a new top made this Spring. Also, the motor starts and runs very well, and transmission performs equally as well.
I took this project on because I felt it was a worthy boat to give a new life to, but I didn’t intend to keep it for myself and decided not to replace the motor with a brand new one, in the event that its new owner preferred diesel power.
