28' Herreshoff & Hylan Rozinante Yawl (2003) - Cadenza

Cadenza was built in 2003 by Rockport Marine from L. Frances Herreshoff’s Rozinante plans. The design was modified slightly by Doug Hylan to move the mizzen aft in order to make the steering more comfortable, effectively turning the original ketch into a yawl.

Cadenza is built traditionally with cedar planking on oak frames and spruce spars. While the original Rozinante design was set up for rowing as auxiliary power, Cadenza has an 8 HP Yanmar diesel.

Cadenza is currently cared for by the owner with the help of Bill Mills at Stonington Boat Works in Stonington, Connecticut.

Cadenza was briefly mentioned in WoodenBoat #192 in an article by Maynard Bray titled “A Quartet of Exceptional Ketches” along with the Benjamin Mendlowicz photograph included here.

Cadenza was commissioned by her original owner as a day sailer and successful club racer. Accommodations are minimal with two bunks and a small chart table

Cadenza was donated to Mystic Seaport Museum in 2022 where she was used as part of the museum’s charter fleet. I bought her from the museum in the spring of 2024. The surveyor rated her as “A-1 and Bristol fashion.” I have sailed her out of Stonington Connecticut for the past three years and couldn’t agree more. She is a lovely boat.

Cadenza comes with a Fairclouth cover and a second set of sails, likely the original set. The current working sails are in excellent condition.
