47' Alden Schooner (1934) - SPIRIT

SPIRIT Alden Design #581 was designed for R.W. Everest and is a near sister ship to John Alden’s MALABAR IV which won the Bermuda Race in 1923. Built at Hodgdon Brothers in Boothbay Harbor in 1934, her hull is double planked with cedar and mahogany and her spars are sitka spruce.

The Schooner is now owned by Lars Forsberg who acquired her in October 1987 as the third owner/custodian. She was formerly named DISCOVERY III and VELA. Since taking ownership of SPIRIT Mr.Forsberg has undertaken three major restorations with the goal of keeping her as original as possible.

SPIRIT has recently returned to the racing scene and is an active participant in the CYOA Classic Yacht Challenge Series. Since 2023 she has raced in 25 events and completed 46 races, she has achieved many race wins and frequents the podium.

Between regattas SPIRIT has proven to be a great family cruising boat from Maine to Connecticut coasts.

SPIRIT is currently in wet storage and is preparing for another summer of extensive racing and cruising.
