Owner’s Description
Callisto Was Built in Waipu by Jack Barrott over a three year period in the late 60’s to an Alan Orams design based around what Jack had seen during a trip to America in the mid 60’s. The majority of the timber came from locally harvested Kauri including the Packwood Kauri that was felled on The Brynderwyns. Callisto has a solid 42ft long Kauri Keel with Kauri also used for the floors, planking and deck beams with the remaining being exotic hardwood timbers. She was launched into the river in Waipu in 1972 and kept in a mud berth up the river for many years until silting made this no longer possible due to getting across the entrance. Callisto was used as a family cruiser and also transported many members of the local dive club to the Poor Knights.
She is powered by her original Twin Caterpillar 3160 non turbo Marine diesels that produce 210hp each giving a comfortable cruise speed of 8.5-9.5 knots.
With a fuel capacity of 4000litres extended cruising is not a problem.Callisto is owned by the 3 Forsyth Brothers (Kent, Rhys and Tobias) and their families who share the use, costs and maintenance but mainly the love of being out on the water in Callisto, She gets used extensively around the gulf and most summers to the Bay of islands but with more farther afield adventures definitely in the long term plans.
