SPIRIT was designed for R.W. Everest and is a sister ship to John Alden’s MALABAR IV which won the Bermuda Race in 1923. Built at Hodgdon Brothers in Boothbay Harbor in 1934, her hull is double planked with cedar and mahogany and her spars are sitka spruce.
The Schooner is now owned by Lars Forsberg who acquired her in October 1987 as the third owner/custodian. She was formerly named DISCOVERY III and VELA. Since taking ownership of SPIRIT Mr.Forsberg has done three major restorations with the goal of keeping her as original as possible.
In the summer of 2023 SPIRIT returned to the racing scene and participated in the CYOA Classic Yachts Challenge Series. She raced in 9 events and completed 18 races, she achieved many race wins and frequented the podium.

Hello again. I met you on the pier at Hodgdon Yacht Services in Boothbay Harbor before the regatta there. It was great to see SPIRIT return after the years of my youth when she was ‘Queen of the (local) Fleet” as VELA. And we subsequently watched you do well in the Boothbay and Camden regattas. Best of luck!
Thanks for reaching out. We certainly enjoyed meeting you and would like to follow up to obtain some of the early photos of VELA when she lived in Boothbay Harbor. All the best.
