The first ever ‘Old Gaffers’ race was held on the Solent in 1959, with just 13 boats. A similar race was held on the East Coast of England in 1963. The growing success of these early races, open to gaff rig boats, led to the formation of the Old Gaffers Association as a national association in 1963.
Now it’s 2023, we have been gaffering for sixty years. We are marking this milestone with a series of events around the UK and Ireland, culminating in our Jubilee party on the East Coast in August.
Member’s boats are circumnavigating the island of Britain with a Round Britain Cruise (RBC60) forming a thread throughout the celebrations, joining up the areas and finishing at the four day Jubilee Party.
Several boats have crewing opportunities and we welcome enquiries. Participation will be at the discretion of the skippers.
