Owner’s Description
A charity that promotes the maritime heritage of St.Ives, Cornwall, primarily through the use and maintenance of a class of double-ended, lugger first introduced to the St.Ives fishery in the mid 1880s.
The charity has launched two new Jumbos which are replicas of a specific design by the renowned local builder, William Paynter and were researched and built by Jonny Nance. Ironically named after the largest animal in captivity, the Jumbo was originally introduced at the end of the age of sail and shortly before the demise of the fishery and so represents the epitome of sailing boat design resulting from generations of trial and error.Photos
